Measure Card Cabinet Door Travel and Retrieval Clearance

Check the moving door, drawer and merchandise envelope on the actual store plan instead of approving only a closed-cabinet footprint.

A practical planning method with a downloadable working record. Examples are illustrative; they are not test results or a specification for an unverified product.

FOCUS planning schematic. A sequence of decisions, not a photograph or a completed customer project.

Identify every moving part

A closed cabinet footprint describes only one state of the fixture. Ask the drawing to show hinged doors, sliding panels, drawers, removable trays and any service panel that needs room to open. The required access can occur on the staff side, customer side or at an end panel.

List the task that uses each opening: selling, replenishment, cleaning or maintenance. An opening used occasionally can still affect adjacent furniture or a wall. Do not ignore it simply because it is absent from a marketing photograph.

Draw the actual travel envelope

For a hinged door, locate the pivot and show the sweep through the proposed opening. As a hypothetical illustration, a 550 mm door leaf has a different moving envelope from a sliding panel; the value is not an aisle recommendation or a FOCUS product dimension. Use the approved hardware and drawing for the actual cabinet.

For a sliding door, show where the panels overlap and which display positions are accessible at one time. For a drawer or tray, show its open projection and any handle. A nominal opening width does not necessarily describe the route of a hand carrying an item.

Add the merchandise and the operator

Take the largest approved sample holder or tray through the opening. Check the full movement from display position to the intended inspection or holding surface. Record where the operator stands and whether the movement requires another door to be open.

Do not simply add a universal hand-clearance number to the holder. Grip, tray type, display angle and surrounding hardware differ. Observe the proposed operation and identify what prevents smooth removal or return.

Test adjacent fixtures in their open states

Put the cabinet envelope on the measured plan with the nearest counter, wall return, chair or stock fixture. Draw the adjacent doors and drawers open as well. Check the combinations the store actually needs to use at the same time.

A corner counter or end cabinet deserves its own check. An opening that works on a straight run can conflict with a perpendicular fixture, an entrance route or a service device placed later.

Record the result on the right revision

Keep the fixture reference, opening type, measured clear opening, sample merchandise and observed movement together. Photograph the difficult position from the staff side and mark the relevant area on the plan.

If the access arrangement changes after the review, repeat the affected checks. A different hinge, handle, shelf height or counter join can invalidate an earlier observation even when the cabinet outside size remains the same.

Keep site approval separate from a fit check

This procedure establishes a way to review merchandise access and neighbouring furniture. It does not establish local accessibility, fire, structural or installation compliance. The responsible project parties must confirm applicable requirements for the actual site.

Send the open-state sketch with the quotation brief. It allows the supplier to discuss a different access arrangement before a finish or cabinet count becomes fixed in the order.

Questions before using the worksheet

Is the outside cabinet dimension enough to approve access?

No. Record the moving parts, clear opening and actual retrieval movement.

Does a successful retrieval test prove local compliance?

No. It addresses one operating task; the responsible parties must verify all applicable site requirements.

Apply the record to your fixture brief

Send the completed fields with your measured site information, merchandise examples and required delivery destination. Identify any unverified assumptions so they can be resolved before the configuration is approved.
